Funny thing happened to me today. I was thinking on some ZFS setup issue I have recently and while at at that I was checking Adriatic weather (I am going to sail there tomorrow). And then I noticed that side ads that was displayed in the right bottom corner. Brilliant, isn't it ?
I knew Google acquired mind reading capability...

Well, I guess everybody have seen this already. It leaves mixed feelings, as on one hand it is something that you've always counted on being here that vanished. On the other hand it can be a new beginning. I was somewhat surprised it took only a few moments to turn everything into red-white palette. I guess I will miss Sun's traditional gray/blue colors. And seeing "Oracle Solaris" does make funny feelings.

ZFS deduplication has been integrated

A really great news - ZFS deduplication project has been integrated into ON source base.

The funny thing about it is that I was having a conversation with a friend yesterday and said that I am willing to bet money on ZFS dedup going to be in over the course of the nearest two weeks. I never expected it to happen that quick!

This build comes with a lot of goodies. One of the most interesting is Project Boomer (PSARC 2008/318). This project introduced new audio architecture for Solaris. Another big thing is integration of GNOME 2.26.

Git support for webrev

During recent months I was heavily using Git (as a part of the project I am doing for one my customers). At first it was quite a rough experience after getting used to Mercurial, but after some time I learned to appreciate the great power Git puts in my fingertips. It takes time to learn how things are done the "Git" way, but once you are there you do not really want to go back to Mercurial.

So one day I decided to switch all my OpenSolaris related development to Git. First thing was having a Git clone of the ON repo. I used hg-fast-import utility (available at git://repo.or.cz/fast-export.git). After doing some coding and I wanted to generate a webrev, but unfortunately webrev doesn't understand git. So I decided to add git support to webrev.

And here we go http://cr.opensolaris.org/~imp/git_support. This webrev is generated by git-enabled webrev from git repo !

This stuff still requires more work and a lot of polish, but all the basic functionality is in.

For those brave souls that want to test it SUNWonbld package is available for download.

Some time ago I wrote about adding Microsoft webcore fonts to Solaris. Since then some more fonts have been added to the archive and it is time to update my recipe as well. However this time I wanted to automate the process as much as I could. So I came up with the script that downloads the fonts and builds the package.

lucreate can screw your libc

I bet there are plenty of people using Solaris Live Upgrade facility. So am I for more than 5 years. I thought the procedure is well tested and bullet proof. Nonetheless, I recently trip over quite an amusing bug in lucreate/lumake. Well, actually it is in /usr/lib/lu/lucopy, which is called internally during Boot Environment (BE) population.

Let's see the problem:

What ? /usr/lib/libc/libc_hwcap1.so.1 is different ??? How can that be ?

At first glance it seems to be absurd. One would understand if /lib/libc.so.1 would be different, if during copy they forget to umount it. (/libc/libc.so.1 is mounted during boot on one of the hardware specific versions from /usr/lib/libc). Something must be really wrong here. Where are the Live Upgrade sources ?

Unfortunately Live Upgrade suite is not open source and, probably, never will be. However, clever observer may notice that most of the LU files are, in fact, shell scripts. Fortunately for us the problematic file is script as well.

Looking at /usr/lib/lu/lucopy near line 1266 one can notice that there seems to be correct handling of the mounted /lib/libc.so.1. The caveat here is that at this moment both /lib/libc.so.1 and /usr/lib/libc/libc_hwcapX.so.1 are linked to each other !!!

It turns out that cpio that copied over all the content of the original BE to the new BE was smart enought to notice that both files have same inode number and re-created that on new BE. Now, when lucopy thinks that it only copies generic libc.so.1 it also inadvertently overwrites the hardware specific one !

Ok, we see the problem, but is there any workaround ? One simple way to avoid trashing libc_hwcapX.so.1 would be to unlink the new /lib/libc.so.1 right before copying. That way we will never harm any other file that could be linked to it.

The era of DTrace

The kernel debug printf thread discussed recently on opensolaris-code forum raised interesting things. Inspired by Mike Shapiro mail I started to rework all my DEBUG cmn_err() in the Bluetooth prototype into DTRACE_PROBEn() calls. At some point I realized that there is no need for DTRACE_PROBEn() calls at all. Exactly like Mike suggested - all the necessary data processing can and should be done externally in the accompanying D-script. I have to admit it was quite a revelation for me. I think only now I start to comprehend the real power of DTrace and I am sure there will be more plesant surprises on the way.

So, good bye cmn_err() - you served me well, but it is a new era of DTrace !

365 days of OpenSolaris uptime

Well, 365 days full of interesting discussions, heated debates, creating a mindshare, forming a community - building OpenSolaris to what it is today. I am very proud to be part of it.

From my part these 365 days were filled (with no particular order) with:

1. Contributing a very first non-Sun bug fix to ON consolidation.

2. Contributing to Polaris project - some may remember a burst of posts this winter in the press on OpenSolaris/PPC kernel being built. While the meaning of this was quite exaggerated by the press it was a big step none the less.

3. Taking care of OpenSolaris Subversion repository.

Polaris community site has arrived

Polaris Community site if finally up and running. It took some time to figure out which software to run there and where to host it and after a month of preparation it is now operational. Kudos to Craig and Dennis for making it happen.

The software we run there allows us to have a wiki, a ticket management, a simple project management, etc - I feel very much impressed with the overall quality of it. Good stuff! I am surprised I never heard about Trac before...

Rainy evening at Murphy's

It was rainy yesterday evening, but it didn't stop us - John Plocher, Leon Koll and myself - from getting together at Murphy's pub in Herzelia marina. Place was quite crowded - people were gathering there to watch the basketball game later that evening on the big screens around the pub. So we had to wait some time while the staff were figuring out where to sit us. The good thing is that we've got the first round of beer on house for standing patiently :) Too bad Leon showed up a little later and missed that.

Anyway, if you ask me - pub is one of the best places to have good technical talk :)

1st IOSUG meeting

On Thursday, Dec 1, Israel OpenSolaris User Group got together for the first time. It was very good to see all the people that came. The gathering wasn't that big - 10 guys overall - but it is the quality that matters, not the quantity :) Sun Microsystems Israel hosted the meeting (great many thanks to Malcolm Kavalsky for taking care of the place and the pizza !).

We spent time talking about what's going on with OpenSolaris and discussing what can we do (bearing in mind specific local requirements - Hebrew support, etc) It needs to be mentioned that Israel computer market dominated quite seriously by the Evil Empire and the interoperability with their product is very essential when it comes to deploying a UNIX solution.
All in all we managed to create nice and family-style atmosphere as can be seen on the photos. Thanks for coming to all the people !

Bringing Microsoft webcore fonts to Solaris Desktop

There are not so many things from Microsoft that I like. In fact there is, probably, only one thing - webcore font set. Verdana looks great in the browser. And for those who read Hebrew web sites it is almost impossible to view them with other fonts - they are all created using Verdana fonts. So a couple of day ago, when I installed Solaris on my laptop I decided to get these fonts working.
The fonts used to be available from Microsoft' web site for free download. However, at some point they removed the files. I am not sure what the legal status of these fonts today, but you can download them from a number of places. I've got mine here.

So if someone wants to do it here is the recipe.

1. Download the fonts archive and open it, say in /var/tmp
2. Create directory /usr/share/fonts/webcore and /usr/share/doc/webcore-fonts
3. Move fonts from webcore-fonts/fonts to /usr/share/fonts/webcore
4. Move docs from webcore-fonts/doc to /usr/share/doc/webcore-fonts
5. TrueType fonts need fonts.scale file. If you have ttmkfdir utility use it to create it. Otherwise get the file from here. Put the file into /usr/share/fonts/webcore
6. Run mkfontdir -
/usr/openwin/bin/mkfontdir /usr/share/fonts/webcore
7. Tell your fc-cache where to find these fonts.
7a. Put local.conf into /etc/fonts
7b. If you use Blastwave put it also in /opt/csw/etc/fontconfig
8. Restart the fc-cache to make sure it picks up new fonts.
8a. svcadm restart fc-cache
8b. /etc/init.d/cswfconfig start

Now you may want to restart your browser to reconfigure it for using Verdana. The example here shows my Firefox configuration. I have to add that these fonts look really good on laptop 1024x768 LCD screen.

Also I am not an expert in font configuration, so if you know a simpler or cleaner way of installing fonts, please let me know.

So many things happened this week - Miluim (military reserve service), build 27 released (ZFS), wireless drivers for Intel chipset finally hit the street (finally dumped FC4 from my laptop and installed Solaris), Athlon 64 X2 arrived for my office machine. And finally caught a flu at the end of the week :( Too many things to handle... The good thing, however, is that I writing this blog entry on my IBM ThinkPad T43 running Solaris Express B27 with iwi wireless driver - the only thing that I really miss is Skype.

Installing Solaris on FC storage with MPxIO

This evening I got another IBM Blade server HS20 with FC HBA. I wanted to install Solaris on it and suddenly I realized that it is a great opportunity to test install/boot from FC storage. Fortunately I had a DS4300 storage array connected to the system with some spare space left on one of its volume groups. I tried that kind of installation about a year ago, but until new boot was integrated into Solaris booting from FC HBA had little chances to success.

So I booted the Blade from the CDROM and it readily presented the FC disk as a choice for the installation. It worth noting that DS4300 is connected via two controllers, so MPxIO merged two hardware nodes into one virtual. This very long name c5t600A0B800019D82F000014804368A7C0d0 is the name of the disk based on its GUID rather then on WWPN. DS4300 is an Active/Standby box, however MPxIO supports these kind of controller (Engenio-based) pretty well. So the installation went ahead and I went to drink tea. 10 minutes later it was over and after reboot I enabled the BIOS on QLogic FC HBA card and set the FC node and LUN to boot from. That's was it. Everything just played happily along.

Nevada b23 on IBM Blade HS20 or trading swap for DVD

Well, I recently started at new place. There are many Linuxes here and quite few Solarises. Exactly one. And I had an interesting experience installing Solaris Nevada b23 on it. The machine is a IBM Blade Server HS20 (Nice thing, BTW). The DVD it equipped with is conected via USB and trust me - it is slooow. So when I installed b22 on it a week ago I just burned CDROM 1 of 4 and did a minimal installation. Now, when b23 is out I downloaded all 4 images and setup_install_server'ed it into this machine. At this point I realized that it would be not so simple to upgrade this machine - I didn't want to go through CDROM installation once again (I didn't even had 4 blank media for burning all the images!). And there is some weird problem with mounting NFS share from Linux on Solaris. To make it worth I was running out of time on that specific evening. So I had to come up with some idea pronto. And here is what I did:
I released swap partition (~ 2GB - I was lucky!), newfs it and copied the installation image into it. Then I booted off CD1 and when it asked for starting the installation I umounted the CDROM and mounted my ex-swap partition on /cdrom. Then I continued with installation and choose [currently mounted] swap partition as "preserved" and not mounted anywhere. That appeared to be enough. The installation went happilly on and I went home. Next morning I found system installed.

Nevada B21 on Dell Latitude D610

I am running Nevada on my laptop (Dell Latitude D610) for quite some time now. I think I started with build 17 or so and upgraded it with each new build released as Solaris Community Express. Every time I tried an upgrade I had problem with network boot. The pxegrub loaded from the boot server claimed that there is no network interface (how ironically!). So I ended up with a bunch of Solaris x86 1/4 disks (one for each build). I booted off the CDROM and then chose NFS as a repository. Worked well, but made me feel dummy. Build 21 changed this completely. pxegrub loaded and quickly discovered ethernet and continued to the boot menu. At this point I was happy and started the installation/upgrade anxiously. There were unpleasant surprise down the road, nonetheless. When it came to X autoconfiguration it probed Intel 915 embedded graphics chipset and failed the test color screen. In previous build that step was easy and worked. Well, you could choose any resolution as long as it is 800x600. Apparently, after the installation when Xorg is overtaking the job it displays normal 1024x768, but during the installation Xsun is limited to 800x600. The workaround turned out to be simple - VESA 915 nicely presented by kdmconfig. Same 800x600 resolution and you have your system ready for install or upgrade. Nothing special after that point.
There was no public info on what fixes went into build 21, so there could be some lurking features. No new packages, however, comparing to build 20.

First community contribution to OpenSolaris

In one of my last posts I promised to tell more about why OpenSolaris Contributor agreement is needed. Well, it is time to do so. OpenSolaris 20050818 (eq Nevada build 20) is finally up on http://cvs.opensolaris.org and among other integrated things there is a contribution made by your humble servant. The problem that I've fixed is quite small and affected a tiny percentage of Solaris x86 user base, but what is important is the fact itself. Community is participating in OpenSolaris development. And I am by no means alone. Right now sponsor (Sun engineer) is needed to perform an actual putback on behalf of the community member, but that is going to change in the future, as the SCM platform for OpenSolaris will be set and the process will be streamlined.

I was working on that for quite some time and it just brought a fruit. My employer, Cloverleaf Communications,officially allocated up to 20% of my day job time to OpenSolaris activity (which translates roughly to one day a week). I have to decide now whether to bring my Pegasos II back to office or to setup a tunnel from the office into my home network. So... back to OpenSolaris/PPC (I actually like Polaris) port !

OpenSolaris on PowerPC looks for a new name!

One kind (albeit anonymous!) soul suggested recently in the comment that natural name for OpenSolaris on PPC would be Polaris. Indeed, the idea seems to be obvious. My only concern is that the word Polaris is sooo overused, that it would hardly be associated with [Open]Solaris. That's my opinion of course. I'd like to hear what readers think. Any other suggestions ? Please comment.

OpenSolaris starts its public life

Well, it finally went live. The OpenSolaris web site is opened to public and there a lot of stories around the web on that. I actually planned to stay late this night (Israel time) and blog too, but plans had changed - I had to fly to the US on extremely short notice. So I am kinda missing all the fun - sitting in the hotel after long transatlantic flight and full day on customer site. The good news, however, is that there are a lot of OpenSolaris Pilot members blogging like crazy today, so I would hardly say something new anyhow. Or would I ? Hard to say... The stuff I am on currently (PowerPC port) is far from having something "demonstratable". But then it is a lot of fun. Someday we'll be able to show snapshots like that one, but running on PowerPC. I know that day will come...

"Solaris on PPC cannot be a one-man-project IMHO. What is your estimation on the amount human*hours it will take? Do you think the volunteers will come from Open Solaris or Linux/PPC community? How the IBM and/or Freescale will be involved? "

Porting OpenSolaris to PowerPC is a community project. While community may consist of only one person in theory, that is definitely not the case with OpenSolaris/PPC. [BTW, we need a name. OpenSolaris on PowerPC is too long.] As for the labor estimation - I really hope it would take infinite amount of work. Setting any definite number would mean that work could be done and forgotten, while really useful and alive project would evolve all the time.
Volunteers are coming from many communities - Linux/PPC including. I think it is quite natural. And the experience the Linux/PPC people can bring to the project is invaluable. Pieter Van den Abeele and Sven Luther, for example, are onboard from the very beginning.
As for vendors involvement - Genesi is involved already. Freescale has something to do with it too. bbrv, I believe, can elaborate more on that. As for others - time will tell.

My favorite OS on PowerPC rebirth

Why am I doing it ? Indeed, why ? Isn't there quite a number of UNIX-like operating systems already running on PowerPC ? Well, yeah. There are many. The only thing is I do not really like them. I like Solaris. I am in Solaris world since 1992. I worked with many other UNIX systems during these years - *BSD, Linux, HP/UX, AIX, IRIX. None of them felt like it. Working with Solaris you get used to the style. Solaris style. I know, I know, Linux bigot would say same thing about Linux and HP/UX guy would say similar things about HP/UX. I am fond of Solaris, however. And I was really excited when Solaris 2.5.1 was released on PowerPC in addition to SPARC and x86. That was really great proof of what Solaris is - very clean UNIX implementation which can easily be ported to new architecture. As much I was excited when it was released, as much I was disappointed when I learned that PowerPC port is canceled. That's why when I got on OpenSolaris Pilot program first thought was - that's a wonderful opportunity to bring the best UNIX out there and one of the best CPU architectures together again.

So here am I - working on PPC port. And while at that I'd like to thank Bill Buck and Raquel Velasco for their support for the project.

OpenSolaris under Subversion

Today I tried to import the whole downloaded tarball of OpenSolaris into Subversion repository. Interesting enough, it took more then 2 and a half hours to finish. Somehow I expected it [Subversion] to be more quick. On the other hand the tarball contains more then 38 thousands files and directories, so may be it is not so bad. Hard to say... I should also try it with fsfs as a repository backend. And may be it would be better if I would do it locally, instead of pushing everything over the network.

Update: I tried it locally with fsfs backend and it took 12 minutes. Quite an improvement.

Recently I have reached 35 point Thawte Web Of Trust Notary status. I became aware of all this Free Email Certificate stuff when I've got a signed email from Caryl Takvorian of Sun UK. I quickly enrolled for my own certificate, but then discovered that it is only a beginning of the story. One can find Thawte Web Of Trust Notaries around him and ask them to assure his identity and assigned a number of trust points. When 50 trust points are accumulated a named Certificate can be issued. When 100 trust points are accumulated one becomes a notary himself. That is still not the end of the story. New notary can only assign up to 10 trust points to a person. The maximal number of trust points notary can assign grows higher together with the number of assertions notary makes. 35 points notary seems to be the maximum the non-Thawte employee can achieve.

Really bad mood

It is more then a month since Solaris Express 8/04 was released and since I wrote something in this blog. And Solaris Express 9/04 is still not available... And today is one of those days when everything seems to be sooo wrong. And all those things that usually entertains me look so boring.
It has to be better tomorrow. I just cannot imaging it going to be any worth...

P.S. Even spell checker doesn't work as it should.

Solaris Express 8/04 (aka Solaris 10 Beta6, aka s10_b63) should become available tomorrow. There are quite a number of neat features. My favorite is an x86 FC driver stack. I waited for it for quite a long time. We'll see tomorrow...

Wow ! Today is my birthday and my wife had a surprise for me. Olga warned me in advance not to plan anything for this Saturday morning. We got up and she quickly fed Sam (1y 3m) while two other children (Lisa [12y] and Alex[19y]) took care of themselves. We packed into the car and she said to drive in Herzeliya direction. It turned out we were heading Herzeliya airfield, where she arranged for the Cessna 152 for me to fly (well, with the professional pilot actually). I was questioned by a security guy (just like in the Ben Gurion airport - "How long do you live in the country ?", "Who packed you bags ?" [what bags ???], etc. Nice fellow, anyway.) and then there was a quick introductory overview of the plane and flight. In a nutshell, it came down to simple "Do not fight with me over the stick!" instruction. Then we were ready to fly.
Pilot took me to the plane - it was Cessna 152 II. I flew it a couple of times in flight simulator, but it was my first time to hold a real stick of the real plane. I inserted myself (literally) into the left seat while Lisa was shooting me. I ignited the engine and instructor started to taxi to the runway. In couple of minutes we were airborne. That simple. Cessna 152 is quite a light plane so she quickly gained speed and altitude. When we climbed to 600 feet instructor said - "Plane is yours, try to keep the direction and level" and let me fly. I took the stick and the plane immediately started to fall aside to the left. Another 20 seconds and I was ok with it. I flew it straight forward and kept altitude. Another couple of minutes and instructor said that he thinks I am doing fine and it is time to climb to 2000 feet and to do something interesting. So I pulled up and we climbed to 1800, where instructor talked to the tower and then said we should stay there. He intended to show me a couple of aerobatics figures, but as soon as he said "Here comes free fall" I said I do not think that is such a good idea and he handed over the stick back to me. I started to play (!?) with it. Left turns, right turns, up and down - it was very nice and I thought: "Well, it is not so bad after all. I feel fine an flying Cessna is quite easy." T'was a big mistake. It retaliated back almost instantly by having me feel sick. I hated myself at this moment. I asked instructor how much time do we have yet and he said around 7 minutes. I decided to hold on for this time, no matter what. Instructor, probably, noticed I am not feeling well. He took over the stick (I didn't fight over it!) and headed to the runway. I observed landing as a passenger (as it was planned) and it felt like landing the plane is much more complex that taking off. At least from my point of view. Anyway we touched runway and taxied to the stop. Lisa, again, filmed me crawling out of the plane. I felt a little bit dizzy, but it soon went away.

Solaris AHCI driver project now accepts donation via PayPal. Frankly speaking I am not expecting money to start flowing in, but if I wouldn't opted for it I wouldn't be paid for sure.

logrus upgraded

I upgraded logrus to Solaris Express 06/04 (aka Solaris 10 Beta 4, aka s10_b58). I did first a Live Upgrade, but then recalled that I wanted to change partitioning anyway and just went for fresh installation. Build 58 supposed to support Opteron. At least it recognized Tyan S2885' on-board Gigabit Ethernet out of the box. Still no SATA support. Presumably it should come with Build 61 - which probably means August time frame.

Thunder becomes logrus

As memory problems with thunder got fixed, it (machine) now gets its official name "logrus", since it becomes my primary office workstation. That would be my first non-SPARC primary workstation for last ten years. Wow !

Rosemary officialy declared dead. Nothing came out during two weeks. I wonder what was the problem - bad seeds (as Olga suggested) or bad treatment I gave it ? Peppermint grows quite good. I decided to grow parsley instead of rosemary.

Thunder memory problem is solved

Thunder memory problem appears to be related to the AMD errata 101. Having BIOS Node interleave and ECC memory scrubbing turned on simultaniously on MP machine will result in memory problems. I turned memory interleaving off and machine seems to be much more stable.

This morning I ran memtest86 on thunder it there were tens of thousands memory faults reported. :( I called technician and he claims that memtest86 cannot handle Opteron correctly. It doesn't sound too convincing. Anyway they sending new memory tomorrow.
We'll see...

New Opteron machine is not as good as it may seems

Thunder (name to be changed shortly) already crashed 3 times. Each time mdb shows different place and different reason. May be it is defective memory DIMMs ? Bad CPUs ? I don't know.
I'll try to run memtest86 on it next morning.

New two way Opteron machine has arrived

This Thursday noon a box appeared in the lobby with a new [anxiously awaited] 2-way Opteron machine in it. It has a Tyan S2885 motherboard with 2 Opteron 244 processors and 2 GB of memory. No doubts I put Solaris Express build 55 on it immediately. Quite a nice box.

Last week I decided to grow something in the kitchen.
I choose peppermint and rosemary to be an experiment
subject. I brought seeds and pads from the greenhouse
and sowed the seeds last Saturday. To my surprise it grew.
Peppermint already has some tiny green leafs. Rosemary'
destiny is still unknown as of today.
